History
It was founded by CJ & Ruth Hansen in 1948 as an Iron Fireman Oil Furnace Dealership and quickly grew into a full service Commercial and Residential Mechanical Construction Company. CJ & Ruth Hansen actively operated the business until 1974 at which time CJ became highly active in National Industry Association efforts (PHCC), eventually serving as the National President. At that time their son, CW (Bill) Hansen P.E. (OSU 1961, Engineering), took over active leadership of the business and is currently active in the daily operation of the business to this day.
In 1984 his son, C Jay Hansen (UofO BS 1989), came to work in the family business and continued to do so after college until today. Bill & Jay remain very active with industry advancement efforts including serving on the State Plumbing, Mechanical and Energy Efficiency boards as well as boards with SMACNA (Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors National Association), PHCC (Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Contractors Association), and remain members of ASHRAE, MPBIA, PMCA/MCA, and NFPA (National Fire Protection Association).

CJ Hansen Co., values the smaller family oriented nature of our business. Our strength is in the people who work with us and in our community. This is why we remain a Union contractor and are signatory with Local 290 Plumber/Pipefitters and Local 16 Sheet Metal Workers. This continued relationship allows for the highest level of training possible from both a technical and safety point of view.

Gene Rawlings
While we value all of our Coworkers at CJ Hansen Co., Inc there are always some that stand out. Gene Rawlings was a service Technician who worked with us in the 50’s and 60’s and early 70’s. Gene was a very kind and friendly man and took his craft and the Customers he served very seriously. Gene also was very active in the community donating countless hours to the Salem Soap Box Derby Club. He can be seen here assisting at one of the meets at Bush Park in the mid 60’s. CJ Hansen, my Grandfather was a early adopter of Tech and CJ acquired a system of devices that functioned as a pager system. Gene, responding to one of these pages, suffered a heart attack and passed away in the basement of the Salem Mayors house while trying to repair the antiquated GE diesel oil fired furnace. This was a tragic loss to all who new and loved Gene and we miss him to this day.
